Road House Full Movie Review

In a Doug Liman film, you can count on certain trademarks: epic action set pieces, breakneck pacing, and a central figure who embodies true heroism. 'Road House', drawing inspiration from the 1989 flick starring Patrick Swayze, doesn't hold back on the entertainment factor and remains a fun ride from beginning to end.

This gritty action thriller vividly illustrates the consequences of damaging the hyoid bone, with bone-cracking sounds punctuating the narrative. However, beneath its revenge-driven plot lies a thread of humanity, embodied by a father-daughter duo running a bookstore.

While the story line might seem straightforward and predictable, it's Liman's skillful direction that transforms it into a thoroughly enjoyable cinematic experience.

The plot of 'Road House' centres on Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former UFC fighter haunted by a violent incident in which he accidentally killed an opponent during a match. Struggling to move on from his past, Dalton still grapples with the weight of his reputation.

When Frankie (Jessica Williams), the owner of a roadhouse in Glass Keys, offers him a job as a bouncer, Dalton sees it as a chance for redemption. Frankie's primary concern is safeguarding her roadhouse from Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen), who aims to replace it with a new concrete structure.

Dalton proves himself adept at his new role, but trouble arises when Knox (Conor McGregor), an associate of Ben's incarcerated father, enters the scene, unleashing a wave of violence.

It is evident that the film does not takes itself too seriously, and the screenplay of the film has been updated to resonate with today’s audience while preserving the essence of the original. It stays faithful to the original plot while injecting modern sensibilities.

The fight sequences are expertly choreographed, lending an air of authenticity. Doug Liman demonstrates a keen understanding of the film's premise, despite its simplistic plot. With corrupt cops, drugs, a compassionate doctor, and a nearly super heroic protagonist, the film offers a exhilarating experience.

It's a roller coaster ride that doesn't leave much room for contemplation, with action and music dominating the screen and keeping viewers thoroughly engaged.

The film becomes compelling largely due to the presence of Jake Gyllenhaal. Known for his acting talent, Gyllenhaal seamlessly blends his acting prowess with thrilling action sequences, elevating the excitement level of the film.

Portraying an ex-UFC fighter who maintains a quiet demeanour, he delivers a commendable performance, particularly shining in combat scenes opposite Conor McGregor when he is shirtless.

However, it's Conor McGregor's appearance as Knox in the latter half that nearly steals the spotlight. The UFC champion makes a highly entertaining debut, adding an extra layer of excitement to the film.

'Road House' suffers from mediocre cinematography and subpar lighting, yet its compact plot, gripping action sequences, and a fierce performance by Jake Gyllenhaal compensate for these shortcomings.

It epitomizes the archetype of countless films that flooded theatres in the 80s. Some films, like "Road House," are best enjoyed without overanalysing them.

Their sole purpose is to deliver entertainment in any form, and 'Road House' fulfills this objective admirably. Gyllenhaal's portrayal of a philosophical man adept at hand-to-hand combat is reason enough to give it a watch.

Drive-Away Dolls Full Movie review

Was looking forward to this movie after watching the trailer a few weeks ago but man this was absolutely awful. I will watch almost any movie at AMC that is listed as a comedy because it seems like they dont put out as many comedies anymore, but I absolutely regret seeing this movie.

I understand comedy is subjective and that while I think this movie was not funny at all, I know others may find it entertaining. These are just my opinions.

The best thing about this movie was that it was under 90min. I think they could have actually cut another 20 minutes out of it and it would not have affected a single thing. The movie goes absolutely nowhere and is just a jumbled mess.

I saw the trailer and thought, "oh cool a short wacky road trip type movie with Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and Beanie Feldstein, this should be decent". I couldnt be more wrong.

These actors obviously dont guarantee a good movie but I think combined they had maybe 5 minutes of screen time the entire film. Its weird to market movies with bigger names when they arent really in the movie at all.

The story really makes no sense but not in a fun way. It felt like a first draft that was made in a day. I laughed exactly one time the entire movie. The characters are insufferable and I just really didnt care about anything that happened.

The script is an absolute mess and by the end of the movie youre just like "wtf was that?!". I was so close to walking out so many times but once I was halfway through the movie I just decided to stick around. It was so bad I just kept saying I wish I saw Madame Webb instead.

I could go on for hours about why this movie was awful. If this is literally your last/only option to fill an A-list slot then maybe go for it, but otherwise avoid this movie at all costs. Let me know what you
rastas thought.

Night Swim Full Movie Review

Night Swim is written and directed by Bryce McGuire and it stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon as a couple who move into a new house with their kids, only to discover that their pool is haunted. That’s it, that’s the premise of the first movie of 2024.

A finite body of water is haunted by a supernatural force of some sorts and what ensues is the family dealing with their… haunted swimming pool.

Right out the gate, I need to say that this is a review that’s going to feature very little in the way of positives for the movie and I might as well get the few nice things out of the way. Russell and Condon are both trying their best in the acting department.

Condon in particular breathes some life and energy into her role as the wife, but it’s still nowhere near enough to fully elevate a downright horrendous screenplay.

Russell seems to be perfectly serviceable in the first two acts, but the third act is where he’s clearly checked out. His line delivery goes flat and it’s clear that he’s phoning it in for an easy paycheck and I really can’t blame the guy. There’s not much else that the movie has going for it.

With a premise as goofy as a haunted pool, it’s hard to sell in premise alone, so you have to hope that there’s good execution. Is that the case here? Hell no. With it being a horror film, the one thing it needs to do is provide some scares and it doesn’t manage that one bit.

What the movie tries to pass as horror are jump cheap jump scares that you can see coming from a mile away. There’s potential for a horror movie to be made about the terror in something as mundane as a pool and it could maybe capitalize on something like a fear of drowning or something to that effect, but the movie instead just relies on weird ghostly imagery jumping out at you accompanied by a loud sound effect.

It’s not just that the scary scenes are predictable and lazy, but they’re also laughably bad in some scenes. There’s just the general idea of a haunted pool and the family simply having to not go near the pool in the first place, but individual scenes stand out as poorly constructed.

For example, there’s the Marco Polo scene where the girl is playing with her boyfriend and once the creepy stuff start happening, she just keeps her eyes closed and stays in the pool. Why? From a filmmaking point of view, she’s doing it because the plot needs her to, but there’s no logical reason for her to be doing that.

People in my theater were actually shouting “Just open your eyes!” at the screen and I normally hate when people yell in the theater like that, but this was one of those rare instances where I was close to joining them. This movie is filled with laughable scenes like that.

The movie’s attempt at an actual store comes in the form of Wyatt Russell playing a former baseball player who had to retire early because of a muscular disease and he’s tempted by the haunted pool since it provides some type of healing that makes his illness fade.

Again, there’s potential in a Monkey’s Paw “Be careful what you wish for” story device, but by the end of the film, the entire scenario is handled in an extremely convoluted manner filled with a bunch of lazy exposition that’s just dumped out all over the screen with zero trust in the audience to figure things out on their own.

The attempts at twists are painfully obvious and the reveal of the pool’s true plan (yes, that’s an actual sentence I just typed) is just ridiculous. No spoilers here, but it’s just one of those “Someone got paid to write this” moments.

Overall, Night Swim is every bit as bad as the premise would have you think. It’s not scary and there’s simply no logical decision-making by the characters when all you have to do with a haunted pool is to just avoid the damn pool.

Seriously, just chill in your house and avoid swimming and you’ll be fine. This is easily the worst movie of the year because it’s the first movie of the year, but it would still be one of the worst even if this came out later in the year and it still had other bad movies to contend with. Buckle up, folks, it’s January and we know what type of movies to expect this time of year.
